ניוזלטר אנגלית #6 – המילה Have

מאת אישמעאל בן-ישראל, מורה לאנגלית בלינגולרן

In this month’s edition, we’ll learn about the verb “have” and its different usages. We’ll also talk a little about the Present Perfect Tense.

Let’s see how the verb “have” is used in sentences and phrases

“Have” is one of those words in English that “change” their meaning according to the context of the phrase or sentence that they’re in. “Have” is a verb, so it has a special form in the present simple for the third person singular (he/she/it)-has, for the past tense-had, and also for the future-will have.

Let’s talk about a few of the different ways in which “have” is used:

Present Perfect tense – for example – I have already done my homework. {We’ll talk about this tense in greater detail in a minute…}
Possession – I have a big house. He has a nice family. Last year I had a good job.
Need – I have to go. She has to be quiet. We had to evacuate the school last week.
Eat or drink – We had lunch together and then we went out to have a drink.
Have fun!

FYI (for your information)

When “have” is used with the meaning of need (You have to be careful.) it belongs to a group of words called “modals” (not to be confused with models). “Modals” are special words like should, would and could that come before verbs (You should take a jacket.). Most modals don’t get ‘to” after them, but have is different and therefore have is a “semi-modal”.

Present Perfect

We use the Present Perfect to describe actions that happened in the past and affect the present. The focus is on the outcome, instead of on the action itself. This tense is created by adding the past participle (V3) to have or has:
A: Would you like to see the new Tarantino movie?
B: No, I have already seen it. {Therefore I don’t want to see it again now.}
A: Would you like to eat something?
B: No, I’ve already eaten. {Therefore I’m not hungry now.}

In our next newsletter we’ll learn about the Past Simple tense and you’ll be able to compare it to the Present Perfect.

That’s it for now!

Thanks for taking the time to read this Newsletter. We hope you found it useful and interesting.

See you next time!
