 Read Along in English

Read Along”“?

Read Along

Elevator Pitch

What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a short, persuasive speech that you use to get someone interested in you or in your services, products or ideas.

Why is it called “elevator pitch”?

We all know what an elevator is (‘lift’ in British English) and we all know that during an elevator ride you can find yourself in the presence of people you don’t usually have the opportunity to spend time with. Think of the people standing with you in the elevator as a captive audience that have nowhere to go. So an elevator pitch is used when you have only a very short amount of time (maybe 30 seconds) to introduce yourself, before the person you’re talking to runs away (gets out of the elevator).

Depending on the context, “to pitch” can mean to throw, for example – the pitcher in a baseball game is the person who throws the ball to the batter of the opposing team. However, to pitch can also mean to present an idea (think of a baseball pitcher throwingsome ideas to the batter instead of a ball).

A good elevator pitch is….

  • Short and easy to understand

  • Sincere and honest

  • Memorable (the listener will remember you later on)

  • Interesting (hopefully the listener will want to continue the conversation)

  • Goal oriented (the goal could be to enlist a new client, get a new job, etc.)

  • Relevant to the listeners

Don’t forget to…

  • Explain what makes you unique

  • Show enthusiasm, but be polite

  • Pay attention to body language

  • Practice your elevator pitch in advance (with a friend or in front of the mirror)

Example of an elevator pitch

“Hi sir, my name is Daniel and I’ve been working as a programmer in the R&Ddepartment for the last 2 years. I started working here after I graduated with honors from the Computer Science Faculty at the Technion. I find my work here to be challenging, especially in the ‘Selah’ project, to which I contributed by adding a component that substantially shortened the evaluation process. I believe there’s a way to apply this same method to the ‘Star Dust’ project and I’d be more than happy to discuss this with you. Can we schedule a short meeting so that I can share my ideas with you?”
